I have never understood Gen Y’s obsession with K-BBQ. To me, I always felt it was just a neat way to bulk on meat. I think the reason to why it resonates with so many young people, other than the incredulous obsession with Asian pop music (affectionately labeled as K-Pop), is the immersive experience of cooking with friends or family. Like they say, memories are priceless…or in this case, not too bad of a price tag.
I’m super fortunate to have a Korean friend who can differentiate between authentic and copycat KBBQ restaurants (don’t even get me started on TK Something in Canley Vale….). 678 Korean BBQ (*applauds creativity*) is located on the first floor, sharing the building with an English college. When I asked her how she knew this place, she mentioned that she had seen it in the Korean newspapers, but also it was an ultimate Sydney hotspot for Korean celebrities. As she gestures to the wall covered in autographed photographs, I think about the potential bidding wars on Ebay….
