678 Korean BBQ, Haymarket

678 Korean BBQ, Haymarket

I have never understood Gen Y’s obsession with K-BBQ. To me, I always felt it was just a neat way to bulk on meat. I think the reason to why it resonates with so many young people, other than the incredulous obsession with Asian pop music (affectionately labeled as K-Pop), is the immersive experience of cooking with friends or family. Like they say, memories are priceless…or in this case, not too bad of a price tag.

I’m super fortunate to have a Korean friend who can differentiate between authentic and copycat KBBQ restaurants (don’t even get me started on TK Something in Canley Vale….). 678 Korean BBQ (*applauds creativity*) is located on the first floor, sharing the building with an English college. When I asked her how she knew this place, she mentioned that she had seen it in the Korean newspapers, but also it was an ultimate Sydney hotspot for Korean celebrities. As she gestures to the wall covered in autographed photographs, I think about the potential bidding wars on Ebay….

Om Nom, Melbourne

Om Nom, Melbourne

party 079

Melbourne has long become my second home. People are always quick to quip how lucky I am to spend Christmas in Melbourne every year. Traditionally, Melbourne has been the meeting place for all my extended family, where we eat Christmas ham that my aunts have cooked up, and then the next day, wake up early to go boxing day shopping. But Melbourne is also where I began my love for food. The food mecca, it was my cousin who introduced me to numerous restaurants and little eateries, including Om Nom.

Om Nom. What a delightful name. My other cousin actually thought I was nibbling something when I asked if she wanted to tag along. But let me tell you this dessert place is quite $$$$. That is why its great to have a wonderful cousin who is working full time!

My food adventure in Europe

My food adventure in Europe

IMG_0286

I’ve always loved travelling, inspired to go explore a completely different place and embrace its culture and heritage. For someone who had just finished their HSC exams, it was also an escape from the mediocrity of constant studying. However, unlike most kids who travel interstate to go schoolies, mine was with my family to another continent.

Beautiful, sophisticated, real.

The thing that I admired about Europe is that it doesn’t rely on flashy buildings and complete urbanisation to make its mark (although Rome certainly was a holiday highlight for its buzzy atmosphere). As a photography enthusiast, I couldn’t resist taking some beautiful scenic shots!

The Star, Pyrmont (Part 1)

The Star, Pyrmont (Part 1)

While there’s a plethora of eateries available in the CBD, the “famous” lie on the outskirts of inner Sydney. And while I never plan to gamble in my life, I do appreciate the Star’s efforts of bringing a little slice of “famous” from a walkable distance from Haymarket. For someone who’s lived in Sydney for 17 years, my first taste of Messina and Zumbo were in MELBOURNE. MELBOURNE. That’s unbelievable. Ergh geographical boundaries! Read more

Gigino, Fairfield

Gigino, Fairfield

A small cute corner-eatery, Gigino is a bundle of surprises! When you talk about Fairfield, you naturally do not assume a ‘The Age’s Good Food Under $30’ eatery is located, best captured by my dad as “in the middle of nowhere”. The reason I don’t want to call it a restaurant because it doesn’t that restaurant feel. It instead gives me this retro cafeteria feeling where you go a catch up with a group of friends on sunday morning. Read more

Miso Japanese Restaurant, Haymarket

Miso Japanese Restaurant, Haymarket

Funny thing that you find a quirky simply little restaurant when you least expected it. While the plan was to eat at Wagaya , upon later discovery that it opens at 5pm, I was forced to have  a quick search on urbanspoon to find Miso. It’s a really cute restaurant located in World Square (8 minute walk from Central Station), which specialise in Pork Katsu. As I recall, the pork is free range! Read more

Grano, Wetherill Park

Grano, Wetherill Park

* All photos were taken by my phone. Its filtered because I’m obsessed with VSCO app 😀

Looks can be deceiving. I am not kidding when I talk about this particular restaurant as the only reason I am writing this post, albeit the poor quality photos, is the irritation I felt towards Grano on their service. It hurt more because I had read such good reviews and I was so excited about it. Read more
